Why UV-Protective Clothing Matters for Aussie Kids

Why UV-Protective Clothing Matters for Aussie Kids

If you’re raising kids in Australia, you already know our UV levels are some of the highest in the world... and while sun safety can feel like a lot to keep track of; it really comes down to a simple system: the five SunSmart steps.

UV protective clothing is a really important part of the system, and here’s how the five steps work together (and where UV clothing fits in).

Slip on Covering Clothing

Clothing is your child’s most reliable sun protection.

Look for long sleeves, high necklines and fabrics with a UPF rating. Regular T-shirts may only offer the equivalent of UPF 5 to 10, while UPF 50+ clothing blocks 98% of UV.

If you want something comfy for water play, or is comfortable to play in all day, our Ducksday summer range at Trailsprout are UPF 50+, lightweight and designed for active kids.

Slop on Sunscreen (SPF 50+)

Sunscreen is essential... but it works best with clothing.

SunSmart recommends:

  • SPF 50 or 50+, broad-spectrum and water-resistant
  • Applying 20 minutes before going outside
  • Using enough (about seven teaspoons for a full-body application on an adult)
  • Reapplying every two hours, or after swimming/sweating

Think of sunscreen as one layer, not the whole system.

Slap on a Hat

Choose hats that protect the face, ears and neck... like broad-brimmed, bucket or legionnaire styles. Caps and visors don’t offer enough protection for Australian UV.

Seek Shade

Shade reduces UV exposure, especially in the middle of the day. Use trees, shade sails or bring your own beach tent... just remember UV can still reflect off sand and water, so pair shade with clothing and sunscreen.

Slide on Sunglasses

Kids’ eyes are sensitive to UV. Wraparound sunglasses that meet AS/NZS 1067 offer the best protection, especially when paired with a wide-brimmed hat.

Why UV Clothing Helps

  • It gives consistent, fuss-free protection
  • It’s breathable and comfortable for hot days
  • It lasts (and usually outlives a season of sunscreen bottles)

For families, UV clothing simply takes some pressure out of the daily sun-safety routine... especially when kids are constantly in motion.

The Takeaway

Sun safety doesn’t need to be complicated. Use the five SunSmart steps together... slip, slop, slap, seek, slide; and rely on UV-protective clothing as your easiest first layer.

If you’re looking for long-lasting, UPF 50+ options for summer adventures, the Ducksday range at Trailsprout is designed for Aussie conditions and kid comfort.
