Why “Forever Chemicals” Don’t Belong in Kids’ Gear
Share
You may have seen articles in the past couple of days regarding PFAS (or “forever chemicals”) and the growing calls for a national ban in Australia. Researchers are warning that these synthetic substances, used to make products water-resistant or non-stick, are building up in our bodies and the environment.
For parents, it’s unsettling reading. Kids chew on toys, toddlers roll in puddles, and kids wear their gear hard... the last thing any parent wants to worry about is whether that gear might contain harmful chemicals.
We couldn’t agree more.
PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are used in thousands of everyday products... from cookware to food packaging, and yes; even in some children’s rainwear, toys, and outdoor gear. They’re called forever chemicals because they don’t break down easily, persisting in our environment and, potentially, in our bodies.
In Europe, authorities have proposed a blanket ban on the entire PFAS class, recognising that regulating them one by one isn’t enough. Australia, meanwhile, has only banned three types out of an estimated 15,000... meaning there’s still a long way to go to protect families from unnecessary exposure.
Where We Stand...
We believe kids should be free to explore the world without being exposed to hidden nasties, and parents deserve peace of mind knowing their gear is safe.
That’s why our minimum requirement for a product at Trailsprout is that its PFAS-free.
Take Ducksday, for example... their award-winning kids’ rainwear doesn’t just keep little adventurers dry, it’s also free from PFAS and other harmful coatings, and made with Oeko-Tex® certified fabrics. It’s proof that waterproofing and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Because protecting kids shouldn’t come at the planet’s expense.
What You Can Do
While policymakers debate national bans, there are a few practical ways families can make safer choices:
-
Check the label: Look for products that are explicitly PFAS-free or carry certifications like bluesign®, Oeko-Tex®, or GOTS.
-
Ask questions: Responsible brands will tell you where their fabrics come from and how they’re made.
-
Look after gear in the right way: PFC-free proofers like Nikwax are all great alternatives to keep gear performing the way it should.
At Trailsprout, we’re proud to support brands doing things the right way... for kids, for parents, and for the planet they’ll grow up on.
Because the best adventures start with gear you can trust. 🌱
